A HEARTBROKEN father has cycled 2253 kilometres to hear his late daughter’s donated heart beat again.
Travelling from his home in Wisconsin to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Bill Conner met with Loumonth Jack, the man whose life his daughter saved.
Mr Conner broke down as he heard his daughter Abbey’s heart beat inside Jack.
“Knowing he’s alive because of [my daughter] Abbey, Abbey is alive inside of him — it’s her heart having him stand up straight,” Mr Conner told CBS News.
Mr Jack, 23, suffered a heart attack due to a viral infection and was told he had just 10 days to live, but now thanks to Abbey he has a healthy beating heart.
Abbey, 20, and her brother Austin were found unconscious at the bottom of a pool in Cancun, Mexico last January.
“On her winter break with her brother in Cancun, they [Abbey and Austin] both were found unconscious, face down in chest deep water in the resort’s pool. Unfortunately, Abigail didn’t make it even after medical intervention,” Mr Conner posted on Abbey’s Ride For Life GoFundMe page.
Abbey, who was studying Public Relations at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, died of a traumatic brain injury.
She was flown to Florida but unfortunately didn’t make it through. She was kept on life support for days and doctors were able to harvest her organs.
Her brother, Austin survived the harrowing ordeal and graduated from university last month.
Abbey became an organ donor at the age of 16, which wasn’t at all surprising to her family.
“If you had her as a friend she always had your back, and for her to be helping people in need — that fits who she is,” Mr Conner said.
He continued, “She registered. It’s something that she knew a long time ago. Unfortunately, it came to fruition, but that’s Abbey.”
Following his daughter’s death, Mr Conner decided to hop on his bike and cycle more than 4,000 kilometres, raising awareness about organ donations and was also able to visit the Broward Health Medical Centre in Florida — the place holding Abbey’s body.
It was during this ride that he had the chance to me 23-year-old Loumonth Jack, the man with his daughter’s heart.
Their heart-wrenching encounter was caught on film, and Conner can be seen holding onto Jack as he breaks down in tears, listening to his daughter’s heartbeat.
“She saved me and I can’t repay her. I wish I could but I can’t. All I can do is send my love to her family,” Mr Jack told WAFB in Baton Rouge.
“Through my entire ride, I will be bringing awareness to the impact of organ donation and how important the gift of life truly is when tragedy shows up on your doorstep,” Conner states on the GoFundMe page.
The determined dad is continuing his ride to raise awareness and plans to have a beachfront celebration with a keg of Guinness at the end of it.
